Elway: Quarterback race doesn’t begin until the preseason

New, comments

That’s interesting.

If you listened to the Denver media the past few days, this quarterback competition was over. Paxton Lynch was coming off a couple rough practices and Siemian has been the more consistent of the two, so it appeared the battle was beginning to lean his way.

Well apparently, Denver Broncos President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway has differing views on how this quarterback battle is shaping up.

Elway told 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis that the Broncos quarterback race doesn’t begin until the preseason.

“They are going to keep competing for the job,’’ John Elway, the Broncos’ general manager, said Saturday night following the Hall of Fame speech of former teammate Terrell Davis. “We’ve been in camp a week and two days. We’ll get into preseason. We have not played a game. So as soon as we play a couple games we’ll evaluate then and a decision will be made.’’

That is interesting, considering how we heard all offseason that the battle would truly begin when they arrive for Training Camp. Now we are hearing it truly will not begin until the Broncos play their preseason games.

The Broncos first preseason game will be against the Chicago Bears this Thursday followed by some joint practices against the San Fransisco 49ers and a preseason game against the 49ers that weekend.

So while it appears that Trevor Siemian has a slight lead after a week and two days of Training Camp practices, the winner of this quarterback will be decided during the Chicago Bears preseason game, the joint practices between the 49ers and Broncos, and the preseason game against the 49ers.
