Trevor Siemian comparisons to Alex Smith are no longer a slight

Trevor Siemian = Alex Smith? It’s no longer an insult after last night.

NFL: Green Bay Packers at Denver Broncos
Trevor Siemian ready to be The Boss!
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Yesterday my NFL Week 1 Picks article dropped and in it I used a fair amount of snark, not once, not twice, not even three times to say that Trevor Siemian is the same as Alex Smith. Why? Because Alex Smith, like Trevor Siemian became known as “Captain Checkdown.”

And then 42-27 happened.

Then 28 of 35 happened.

Then 368 yards happened.

Then 4 touchdowns with zero interceptions happened.

And then Pete ate some crow happened.

Right now, as it stands, if Trevor Siemian plays anywhere close to Alex Smith did last night, the Denver Broncos MUST be considered a serious Super Bowl contender.

I’m not sure what lit the fire under Smith’s read end. Maybe the drafting of Patrick Mahomes? Maybe auditioning for his next team? Maybe he was sick of the narrative? I’m not sure what it is, but if that is what did it, then the Kansas City Chiefs are serious Super Bowl contenders as well.

Lay it on me people. Tell me why you believe Siemian = Smith now that it isn’t an insult. Enlighten me on why Siemian can and will take the same leap forward that Smith did. Give us all the hope and the new narrative that if Smith can do it, so too can Trevor! No holds barred!
