Rumor: Broncos ready to make a ‘big offer” for quarterback Kirk Cousins

According to Sporting News’s Eric Galko, the Denver Broncos are prepared to make a ‘big offer” to soon to be free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins this offseason.

Per Galko, it’s currently a two-team race between the Denver Broncos and the Washington Redskins for Cousins services this offseason. He notes that Washington “SHOULD” be the clear favorite, but that the Broncos have made it known that they’re ready to make a big offer to him this offseason.

At this point, it looks to be a two-team race for Cousins: the Redskins or Broncos. The Redskins haven’t done themselves any favors with how they’ve handled Cousins since the 2012 draft, but the fact that he’s grown into a sense of comfort in Washington with coach Jay Gruden and kept relatively upright thanks to offensive line coach Bill Callahan, Washington should be the clear favorite.

But the Broncos have made it clear to those close to Cousins that they’re ready to make a big offer. Over the last two seasons, since moving on from Peyton Manning and letting Brock Osweiler walk (before bringing him back), the Broncos have spent the fewest of any NFL team on quarterback (under $7 million combined over 2016 and ’17). Elway needs to spend at quarterback to win.

This isn’t the first time that the Broncos have been connected to Cousins recently. 104.3 The FAN’s Cecil Lammey also tweeted out that he expects the Broncos to make a big push for Kirk Cousins this offseason.

There continues to be a lot of smoke about a potential Broncos and Kirk Cousins pairing this offseason and it makes a ton of sense. Cousins is by far the best quarterback available and would instantly improve the Broncos offense next season. It would also give Head Coach Vance Joseph a quarterback to work with to prove he can be a Head Coach in this league. I am not sure he will be given a long enough leash to develop a first-round quarterback considering he was nearly fired after just one season.

There is one thing Elway has proven to be good at during his tenure as Broncos General Manager and that is quick fixes. He clearly is motivated to fix the quarterback position and likely is focused on that quick fix.

The best quick fix likely to be available is Kirk Cousins. Where there’s smoke there’s likely a fire. Like it or not, the Broncos and Kirk Cousins is a thing. Will it happen? That remains to be seen but it appears they’re going to try to make it happen.
