The Kansas City Chiefs look prepared to go all-in on Patrick Mahomes II and that could be a good thing for the Denver Broncos and the AFC West in 2018 - but maybe not much more beyond that.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said of the Chiefs intentions with Smith, “My understanding is the Kansas City Chiefs are going to explore trade options for Alex Smith and the likelihood is he is playing for a new team in the 2018 season.”
Smith might go down as one of the least appreciated NFL starters in history. Everywhere he goes teams look for his replacement. Since 2011, he has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL. In Kansas City, he has been nothing short of a franchise quarterback.

The San Francisco 49ers cut bait as soon as they found a dynamic quarterback threat in Colin Kaepernick to replace him with. Yet within a few years, Kaepernick was no longer in their plans while Smith was fighting for playoff berths in Kansas City.
Now it appears to be Mahomes turn to supplant Smith in Kansas City. Andy Reid is putting a lot of faith in the young quarterback to rapidly field a contender. Meanwhile, a team like the Minnesota Vikings might be first in line for a franchise quarterback like Smith. The Chiefs surely won’t trade him to John Elway.
