Report: Chiefs were closing in on a trade for Seahawks safety Earl Thomas

Tough luck.

The Kansas City Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos tonight on Monday Night Football. The odds appear stacked against the Broncos but the Chiefs have already suffered one major loss before tonight’s game even started.

According to reports, the Kansas City Chiefs were closing in on a deal for All-Pro safety Earl Thomas and were preparing to clear cap space to acquire him. However, Thomas suffered a lowered leg fracture during Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals and will now miss the rest of the season.

This is a tough-luck move for Thomas, Seahawks, and the Chiefs. Any trade of Thomas likely ended with a long-term deal with that traded team so Thomas lost out on the deal he has been looking for. The Seahawks lose out on receiving compensation(a 2nd or 3rd rounder) for Thomas who may walk for nothing in free agency. Finally, the Chiefs miss out on adding an All-Pro safety to their secondary that ranks among the worst in the entire NFL. It’s a tough luck deal for everybody involved.

Thankfully for the Broncos, who already faced Thomas this season, he won’t be coming to the AFC West this year and the Chiefs defense will remain leaky. We will see if Case Keenum and the Broncos offense can take advantage of the Chiefs defensive woes tonight, but at least they won’t be getting Earl Thomas.
