I’m going to level with you. When things aren’t going well in Broncos Country, I sometimes like to put on my copy of Denver Broncos: The Complete History to remind myself why week to week torment of losses and ineptitude is worth it.

With the Broncos bye-week in full swing, I went rooting around the Mile High Report archives and found a 12-year old article by former MHR ‘Guru’ John Bena heralding this DVD’s release.

Today is also notable for another reason, as NFL Films released Denver Broncos - The Complete History, a 2-Disc, 6 1/2 Hour look back at the history of the Broncos. The Rocky Mountain News has the following summary --

The first disc is a storybooklike retelling of the highlights (and lowlights) of Broncos history featuring commentary by former Broncos such as Little, Elway, Tom Jackson and Karl Mecklenburg.

Disc two takes viewers back to Cleveland and the infamous AFC Championship Game that featured “The Drive.”

The set also includes special features with Elway, Mike Shanahan, John Lynch and Jake Plummer “in their own words.”

The most compelling goes inside the huddle with Plummer, where he offers glimpses into his fragile psyche and somewhat forgetful mind.

Plummer talks openly about forgetting snap counts on the way to the line of scrimmage, which often ended in on-the-camera shouting matches with his offensive linemen.

While the “In their Own Words...” DVD are largely forgettable in their own right, the actual history DVD is incredible. Picking up at the founding of the Broncos in 1959, it painstakingly details the ups and downs of our beloved franchise through the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. Featuring plenty of rarely-seen footage and context provided through interviews with Broncos players and fans, it’s a great revitalizer on those days when it feels like the Broncos couldn’t covert a 51-yard field goal to save their season if they had to... cough... cough...

Let’s be honest, 2006 was a long time ago. Quarterback Jake Plummer was on his way out, Jay Cutler on his way in. Mike Shanahan’s time with Denver was soon to be up. The Josh McDaniels disaster that spawned Tebow-time and John Fox could never have been anticipated. John Elway was selling cars and his Colorado Crush had just won Arena Bowl XIX a year earlier. Gary Kubiak had only just recently departed to coach the Houston Texans. Peyton Manning was mere months away from hoisting the Lombardi trophy for the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI. Who could have imagined Manning, Elway, Kubiak and would team up with Wade Phillips to win another Super Bowl? Who could have predicted the historic 2013 season that ended so painfully?

The Broncos careers of Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins, Von Miller, Demarcus Ware, Aqib Talib, T.J. Ward, Demaryius Thomas, and others had yet to be written. Heck, Matt Prater didn’t even have the record for the longest field goal in NFL history yet.

Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, Rod Smith, Tom Nalen, Gene Mingo, Dan Reeves, Rick Upchurch, Pat Bowlen, Jason Elam, Simon Fletcher, John Lynch, and Red Miller have all been inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame since the last history DVD was released.

With all due respect to Willie Brown and Tony Dorsett, John Elway was the only legitimate Denver Bronco to be enshrined in the Professional Football Hall of Fame. Since then, Gary Zimmerman, Floyd Little, Shannon Sharpe, and Terrell Davis have joined him (Brian Dawkins as well)... and don’t look now, Pat Bowlen is likely coming along this year.

In fact, when this history DVD was released in 2006, the Broncos had only existed for 47 years (founded August 14, 1959). With the Denver Broncos turning 60 next year, it’s probably time for another volume of this hallowed history to be released. If we can’t have wins in the present, please give us a celebration of who we once were. Remind us of the Broncos Country standard that produced so many wonderful moments so we may look forward to the return of those times.

It’s really been a remarkable 12-years when you think about it...
