Did Belichick throw Super Bowl LII?

You may have already seen this but while scanning through YouTube recommendations, I found this excellent mini-documentary called Superbowl LII: Did Bill Belichick Purposely Throw the Game? You have to search for it or click on the embedded link because the NFL blocks it's use here due to use of their own content.

It is compelling. There is a certain Frontline/Oliver Stone feel to it that held my interest. The serendipity of the Mic'ed Up footage was extraordinary and very hard to ignore or spin differently than the producer did. The very idea that Belichick, who is so hyper-competitive, would use the biggest stage in football to interject his power seemed farfetched to me. But he is a very strange fellow and it certainly isn't impossible. Of course, there's a lot of questions it raises that are hard to answer:

  • If it's true, why didn't Brady demand a trade rather than resist it? or ...
  • Why didn't he retire?
  • Why didn't Kraft fire Belichick for insubordination?
  • Why didn't McKid and Patricia do more to fill in for Belichick? They definitely had the experience and know how to get the job done and win?
  • Why didn't Malcolm Butler come out and explain what happened, especially after he was traded? Or Patricia after he went to the Lions?
  • Why didn't Brady's svengali personal trainer spill the beans? He didn't have NFL sanctions to worry about.
