Baker Mayfield had quite the audience for his Pro Day.
Teams from around the NFL gathered for the last public workout for the University of Oklahoma quarterback before his selection in the NFL Draft. From Marvin Lewis with the Cincinnati Bengals to Mike Maccagnan with the New York Jets, it’s clear the start of free agency wasn’t gong to keep teams from Norman.
Of course, John Elway and the Denver Broncos were there, having sent seven coaches, front office personnel and scouts. And Mayfield noticed.

As Mayfield told reporters after his workout, it was especially “surreal” to pass in front of Elway. As Adam Malnati and I discussed on the latest MHR Radio Podcast, Denver was in Norman to watch and meet with Mayfield. Ideally the organization sent some of those in the contingency out to interview people from around Norman about Mayfield, say wait staff at restaurants he frequents. All for the purpose of getting to know even more about Mayfield and the type of person he is.
As Sports Illustrated noted, the Broncos are also one of them teams to arrange private workouts at their facility with Mayfield. As the story notes, “The Browns, Saints and Jets are among the teams planning to hold private workouts for Mayfield in Norman over the next two weeks, and he has newly scheduled visits to Denver and Arizona.”
There’s also some good quotes from Mayfield in the ESPN story. From how his draft stock has changed from the start of the collegiate season to his work ethic and confidence. But one in particular stood out.
“I have a good feel on which teams like me and which teams aren’t as interested, but you never know how free agency is going to hit,” Mayfield said. “I’m sure there’s been stuff that’s happened since I’ve been working out today, so all I can do is focus on myself.”
Hopefully that team is the Broncos.
