The Broncos have to make a move in the Draft

John Elway and Denver must trade the fifth pick, but not for what you think.

The Denver Broncos are coming to a major decision about the direction and future of the franchise. Soon we will all hear commissioner Roger Goodell say those infamous words, “with the fifth pick in the NFL Draft …”

Well, not as famous as the first pick, but you get the idea. The Broncos have a big decision to make in the 2018 NFL Draft. On the latest Mile High Report Radio Podcast, Ian St. Clair and I practically begged John Elway to do something drastic.

The Broncos look like a team that is going to sit back and let the draft come to them. That’s a mistake. As a player, John Elway made things happen (The Drive). Early in his GM career he went out and made things happen (PFM!). As it sits today, he is apparently content to allow other teams to dictate what they can do in the draft.

Denver is a draft rich team. It has eight picks, including the fifth overall pick, but that doesn’t matter. What’s the point of being rich if all you ever do is eat Ramen Noodles, drive a 1997 Tercel, and vacation at KOA RV campgrounds along Interstate 25? That is what Elway’s drafts have felt like.

Rather than sitting back and waiting, the Broncos should use their draft capital, make a big move, and trade up to the No. 2 pick. It’s not mortgaging the future, it’s betting on a potential franchise changing player.

There is no need to wait. The Broncos have an opportunity to guarantee that the guy they want to draft is available. Whether it’s Baker Mayfield, or another of the big four QBs, or that franchise guard Quentin Nelson, picking second eliminates other teams dictating what the Broncos can do. At least for Ian and for me, this feels like a no brainer. As we said on the show, Denver added some “Mile High Swag” with the addition of Marquette King. Now add even more of it in the draft. Celebrate that swag with this awesome new shirt from MHR.

As we sit and wait for the draft, Broncos Country is tearing their hair out over what Denver should do. There is a plethora of information, and an endless storm of tweets from “insiders” and “experts” who “know” what is going to happen. The truth here is that nothing is certain. One minute Sam Darnold is the consensus No. 1 to the Cleveland Browns. The next, it’s Josh Allen.

Fans are begging for a franchise guard, or Saquon Barkley, or Roquon Smith. Trade down and increase that draft capital. Get Will Hernandez, and draft Kyle Lauletta, or Mason Rudolph. The possibilities are endless. The decision making is maddening. The waiting is unbearable.

In the end, my opinion is that Denver must draft a potential franchise quarterback. That player is Baker Mayfield. Fans will disagree, and that’s fine. However, the only way John Elway can ensure the Denver Broncos get the player they want is by making it happen. Waiting allows other teams to dictate what the Broncos do. That is allowing other GMs to mortgage the Broncos’ future. That’s a mistake.
