As the Broncos head to Dove Valley today to begin the 2018 offseason workout program, a potential Denver Broncos quarterback will be meeting with the teams top decision makers today and tomorrow.
According to reports, Mayfield will likely wine and dine with General Manager/President of Football Operations John Elway, advisor Gary Kubiak, Head Coach Vance Joseph and other top Broncos decision makers/coaches on Monday night. The visit will continue on Tuesday as Mayfield will visit the team facility and likely meet with some select Broncos players during that visit as well.
The Broncos' offseason workout program begins tomorrow. Baker Mayfield will also be in town and have dinner with the Broncos' brass that evening, then visit the team's Dove Valley facility Tuesday. On Thursday, John Elway will have his usual pre-draft news conference.— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) April 15, 2018
As we know, the Broncos have met with Mayfield multiple times throughout the process. They did skip out on his Bowl game against Georgia but did meet with him throughout the rest of the process. They requested to have him on their Senior Bowl roster, coached him throughout Senior Bowl week, had him in for a formal interview at the Scouting Combine, brought everybody on the first day of free agency to attend Mayfield’s Pro Day, and now will bring him in for a formal pre-draft visit. So obviously there is some level of interest there.
9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis recently said that the “honeymoon period in Denver would end” for quarterback Case Keenum if Baker Mayfield was available at the 5th overall pick.
Case Keenum’s honeymoon period in Denver would end the night of April 26 if, say, the Jets took Rosen at No. 3, leaving Mayfield for the Broncos at No. 5.
The Broncos will have dinner with Mayfield on Monday night, then visit with him at team headquarters Tuesday.
It will be their fourth significant, offseason meeting with the Heisman Trophy winner. They also spent several days with Mayfield at the Senior Bowl in late-January, had a 15-minute formal interview with him at the NFL Combine in early-March, and watched his Pro Day workout in Norman, Okla. In mid-March.
Currently, the New York Jets are widely connected to Mayfield and they own the third overall pick after swinging a trade with the Colts in early March. So it is quite possible that Mayfield will be off the board by the time the Broncos pick, but if he is, he will likely be the Broncos selection. However, we are still over a week away from the draft and in the midst of the bulls*itting period, so who knows what is legit and what is not right now.
If the Broncos decision-makers come away impressed with Mayfield after these visits they could decide to trade up with the New York Giants who appear likely to pass on a quarterback with the second overall pick per reports. The reports/rumors suggest that they are targeting Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and he should be available at the 5th overall pick so the trade makes some hypothetical sense.
With everything being said, whispered, and reported, I think Baker is their guy. I don’t know if they want to move up for him, but if he is there at 5, my gut tells me that he will be their pick. If he is not? Well then, things get interesting.
