Horse Tracks: Broncos met with a pair of potential day two defensive back prospects

The Broncos are looking to add to their No Fly Zone secondary.

We nearly one week away from the start of the first-round of the 2018 NFL Draft. This means that teams are finishing their top 30 visits and finalizing their draft boards. Well, we have some news of two potential day two defensive backs making their way through Denver.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Arizona defensive back/safety Dane Cruikshank has a pre-draft visit lined up with multiple teams, including the Denver Broncos.

Cruikshank is a 6’1”, 206lb defensive back who is coming off an impressive Combine. He ran a 4.41 40-time, benched 225 25 times, jumped 38.5 inches and had a broad jump of 121.0 inches.

He is coming off an impressive year where he totaled 74 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, 5 pass deflections, and 1 forced fumble.

Cruikshank is a slot defender/strong safety who can cover tight ends and running back’s if needed. He is a late riser, mostly because of his impressive Combine performance, but the talent is there.

I am not sure there is an exact role for him on the Broncos. They have Justin Simmons and Su’a Cravens to fill these roles, but someone like Cruikshank wouldn’t be a bad addition to the Broncos secondary. Look for him to be a day two selection during the draft.

Next, it was reported that the Broncos have a pre-draft visit lined up with former Alabama cornerback, Anthony Averett.

He is a 6’0”, 185lb cornerback who is expected to be a day two pick in the 2018 NFL Draft as well.

Averett played his college ball at Alabama and was a part of their dominating defense that has had them in the Championship game for multiple years. During his three-year career at Alabama, Averett totaled 98 tackles, 7 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks, 1 interception, 16 pass deflections, and 2 forced fumbles.

The Broncos have been doing their due diligence on the cornerback prospects throughout the process and will likely take one early in the draft. We can add Averett as a potential option.
