By the Numbers -- Mock For GM Contest

I decided to have a little bit of fun with the mock drafts that were entered into the contest again this year. I entered all the numbers into a spreadsheet and came up with some interesting information. Just let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to try and deduce! Note: Undrafted Free Agent signings weren't included in my totals.

Most Popular Players

Picked Nine Times
There were two players who were picked in nine of the mock drafts this year.

  • Fred Warner, ILB, BYU (was picked in Round 3 five times and Round 4 four times.)
  • Will Hernandez, G, UTEP (was picked in Round 1 eight times and Round 2 once.)
Picked Eight Times
There was one player picked in eight of the mock drafts this year.
  • Nathan Shephard, DL, Fort Hays State University (was picked in Round 3 five times and Round 4 three times.)
Picked Seven Times
There were two players who were picked in seven of the mock drafts this year.
  • Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio State (was picked in Round 1 seven times.)
  • Rasaad Penny, RB, SDSU (was picked in Round 2 two times and Round 3 five times.)

By position (In order of most popular)

Cornerback (24 selections)
Cornerback was the most popular pick of this year's mocks. 12 different CBs were selected a total number of 24 times. The most popular pick was Denzel Ward with seven selections. Isaiah Oliver came in second with six.

The highest picked CB in this year's draft was Denzel Ward, who three people have going at No. 5 overall.

Wide Receiver (22 selections)
Wide Receiver was the second most popular pick being selected 22 times. Out of the 11 players picked in the mocks, James Washington was selected the most with five picks. Michael Gallup, Dante Pettis and Equanamious St. Brown were each picked three times.

The highest picked Wide Receiver was a tie between James Washington and Calvin Ridley. Both of them were picked to go at number 40 in one mock draft.

Running Back (21 selections)
The third most selected position was running back. Seven RBs were picked a total of 21 times. The most popular pick was Rasaad Penny, with seven selections. Kalen Ballage came in second with five selections and Ronald Jones received three.

The highest picked running back was Saquon Barkley, who was picked to go 9th overall in one mock draft.

Tackle (20 selections)
There was a three way tie for the fourth most selected position, each with 20 selections. There were nine different offensive tackles in mock drafts this year. The most popular tackle of this group was Orlando Brown, who was selected four times. After him, Geron Christian, Chukwuma Okorafor, and Will Richardson were each picked three times.

The highest picked Tackle in this years draft was Jamarco Jones, who was picked 40th overall in one mock draft.

Defensive Tackle (20 selections)
Also with 20 selections was the tackle on the other side of the field. There were eight different DTs selected a total of 20 times this year. Nathan Shephard was the most popular choice with 8, with Foley Fatukasi coming in with 5. No other DT has more than two selections.

The highest picked DT was Vita Vea, who was picked to go 12th overall in one mock draft.

Inside Linebacker (20 selections)
The third position receiving 20 selections was ILB. Eight men were picked with Fred Warner being the runaway favorite with nine selections. Josey Jewell came in second with three and Leighton Vander Esch and Tremaine Edmunds each had two.

The highest picked ILB was a tie between Tremaine Edmunds and Leighton Vander Esch, who were each picked to go 12 overall in tradebacks. Edmunds was picked to go 12th twice while Vander Esch was picked to go 12th and 15th.

Outside Linebacker (16 selections)
11 different OLBs were picked a total 16 times in our mock drafts. The most popular was Ogbo Okoronkwo, who was selected in three mock drafts. Darius Leonard, Uchenna Nwosu, and Lorenzo Carter were next with two selections each.

The highest picked OLBs were Lorenzo Carter and Tyler Crosby who were each picked to go 40th overall in the second round.

Tight End (13 selections)
There were two positions that had 13 selections, tight end and guard. There were seven different tight ends picked this year. The most popular was Durham Smythe with four selections. Mark Andrews was next with three and Will Dissly was third with two.

The highest selected tight end was Mike Geiski, who was picked to go 71st overall in the third round.

Guard (13 selections)
Like tight end, guards were picked 13 times in the draft, but there were only five of them. The only one picked more than once was Will Hernandez, who was selected nine different times. However, while many picked him to go in the first round, the highest picked Guard was Quenton Nelson at 5th overall.

Quarterback (6 selections)
5 different quarterbacks were selected a total of six times, with Baker Mayfield being the only one selected twice. In both of those mocks, he was selected at 5th overall. Sam Darnold also got picked 5th overall and Josh Rosen was next highest, being selected 7th overall in one draft. Nobody picked Josh Allen.

EDGE (5 selections)
5 different EDGE rushers were picked once each in mock drafts. The highest pick was Arden Key, who was picked 71st overall in the third round.

Defensive End (4 selections)
Four different Defensive Ends were picked once each. The highest selected was Bradley Chubb at 5th overall.

Safety (1 selection)
Only one safety was selected in mock drafts. Godwin Igwebuike was picked to go 160th overall in the 5th round.

By school

Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oklahoma each had four players selected in our mock drafts. Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, North Carolina, Oregon, USC, Washington, and Wisconsin each had three players selected from their school.

By Round

Round One
The most popular choice in the first round was Will Hernandez, G, UTEP, who was picked in the first round eight times.

Round Two
The most popular choice in the second round was Isaiah Oliver, CB, Colorado, with five second round selections.

Round Three
The most popular choices in the third round were Rasaad Penny and Nathan Shephard who each had 5 third round selections.

Round Four
The most popular choice in the fourth round was Fred Warner, ILB, BYU, with four fourth round selections.

Round Five
The most popular choice in the fifth round was Durham Smythe, TE, Notre Dame, with three fifth round selections.

Round Six
Only two players were picked in the sixth round: Nick Deluca, OLB, North Dakota St., and Devron Davis, CB, UTSA.

Round Seven
There were no seventh round selections.
