So the Denver Broncos got the best edge rusher in the 2018 NFL Draft (by many estimations) with the fifth overall pick. I absolutely love this pick. The Broncos now have two elite pass rushers (assuming Chubb’s skills transition well to the NFL) just like they did when they had Demarcus Ware on the other side. Not only that, but Chubb is versatile enough to play with his hand in the dirt or from a two-point stance.
Now imagine this: Von Miller still in his prime; Shane Ray back to his healthy playing weight; Shaq Barrett who is criminally underrated; Shelby Harris who had a breakout year; Derek Wolfe who can collapse the pocket when he is healthy; Demarcus Walker who could turn into another plus pass rusher from the 3 technique; AND NOW add Bradley Chubb to that mix.
That Broncos defense (at least on paper) would seem to be able to rival the 2015 Broncos for getting after the passer on obvious passing downs. I’m really looking forward to what Joe Woods can do with the group of pass rushing aces. It’s time to make Philip Rivers and Tom Brady cry again.
So I grade this draft pick as an A. Yes, we didn’t necessarily need another defensive end (Gotsis and Wolfe were pretty good last year and Harris was a revelation) but you don’t pass up on elite players at one of the premium positions in the league (QB, edge rusher, CB, LT) when you get a chance to take them in the draft.
