Report: Bradley Chubb will play outside linebacker for the Broncos

Bradley Chubb will join a loaded edge rushing group for the Denver Broncos that includes Von Miller, Shane Ray, and Shaquil Barrett.

Bradley Chubb is a Denver Bronco

Bradley Chubb. Enough said.

After the Denver Broncos spent a fifth-overall pick on Bradley Chubb, many assumed he would be a defensive end in their scheme. However, Broncos Head Coach Vance Joseph indicated that Chubb will join the Von Miller and the rest of the Broncos edge rushing group.

Head Coach Vance Joseph called Chubb a “perfect fit” for their defensive scheme.

“No he fits perfect. He’s a good football player. Obviously, a great rusher, also he’s a good player versus the run game. He’s a good player. He plays hard, so as far as his position, he’s going to be an outside linebacker. He’s a great fit, we have a plan for him as an outside linebacker, so we’re excited.”

Chubb has the size(6’4”, 269lbs), the arms (34”), the speed(4.65 40-time), and the strength(24 reps of 225lbs) to play edge rusher in the NFL. He is an athletic player with top-notch pass rushing ability.

He will join Von Miller, Shane Ray, and Shaq Barrett in the Broncos edge rushing groupings giving them a deep and talented unit. The Broncos haven’t picked up Ray’s 5th-year option as of yet, and Shaq Barrett will be an unrestricted free agent next season, so they needed depth there.

When asked if they would use Chubb on the inside, Joseph said that is possible.

“That is possible. Obviously, we are a 3-4 team. On base downs, we are a five-down team. On sub-downs, we are a four-down team. Again, he is a great player. He fits in our system. Obviously, he can move inside on sub-downs and rush. But we also have [DE] Shane Ray, we’ve got [OLB] Von [Miller] and we have [OLB] Shaq [Barrett]. We’ve got four big time rushers. How we use them is almost irrelevant. Having four rushers is always a special treat to have.”

It will be interesting to see if one of Ray or Barrett ends up on the block during tomorrow nights day two of the 2018 NFL Draft. If you’re not going to pick up Ray’s fifth-year option or re-sign Barrett, maybe you try to get some value for one of them. That is just pure speculation from me as of now.

I really like this pick and can’t wait to see Chubb and Von paired together.
