Grading the Broncos draft picks from Day 2 of the 2018 NFL Draft

New, comments

Grade the Denver Broncos draft class from Day 2. They had three picks on the day and all to skill positions.

NCAA Football: Southern Methodist at Memphis Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos appear to have reversed their five-year trend of poor draft day decisions by taking some of the most talented players still on the board with each of their Day 2 selections on Friday.

Courtland Sutton, WR - Round 2, Pick 40

For the Broncos, this was their riskiest pick of their draft so far. Courtland Sutton has huge potential, but would have carried huge bust potential as well if he had been taken in the first round. The Broncos were able to mitigate that risk by going for him in the second round ahead of the Dallas Cowboys who would have selected him a few spots later anyway.

Sutton has the size and catch radius to become a scary threat to opposing defenses inside the red zone. He would open things up for both Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders right away in 2018. Long term, he might even challenge them for a job.

Royce Freeman, RB - Round 3, Pick 71

The Broncos had a bit of a hole at the running back position. With C.J. Anderson gone, they had Devontae Booker and De’Angelo Henderson. That’s not a full stable of runners for the long grind of an NFL season. Freeman has the kind of straight-line speed and bruiser mentality that will help the Broncos inside the red zone.

Frankly, no matter who they threw out there in 2017, the red zone was a problem on offense. The Broncos basically addressed that problem with both of their first two picks on Day 2 of the NFL Draft.

Isaac Yiadom, CB - Round 3, Pick 99

Fans had to wait a long time for the Broncos to make their final pick of Day 2 and for the second year in a row they went with a raw cornerback. Isaac Yiadom is not quite as raw at the position as Brendan Langley, but he will need at least a year to get into the mix for playing time on this loaded Broncos roster.

However, his physicality and style of play is a perfect fit for the Broncos defense. With a mentor like Chris Harris Jr., the sky is the limit for Yiadom.

Overall, I’d give the Broncos a solid B+ for Day 2. Offensively, I think the Broncos will, at the very least, improve from one of the worst in the NFL to average. If not, above average. Case Keenum should protect the football and now he has some red zone weapons. Those are the two areas that hurt this team the most in 2017.

Defensively, Bradley Chubb will help take some pressure off the secondary and Yiadom will have time to learn and grow into a role on a defense that should continue to be an elite Top 5 unit in the NFL.

Overall, I think Broncos fans should be very pleased with this draft. John Elway is surprising a lot of people this week - and in a good way!
