Josey Jewell is a 6’1”, 235lb inside linebacker who is considered one of the better inside linebacker prospects in the draft. He played his college ball at Iowa and was a reason why they had a tough defense during his tenure there.
Jewell played four seasons at Iowa and put up some impressive numbers during that span. During his four-year career at Iowa, Jewell totaled a whopping 433 tackles, 28 tackles for a loss, 10 sacks, 6 interceptions, 1 defensive touchdown, 26 pass deflections, 2 fumble recoveries and 3 forced fumbles. This past season for Iowa, Jewell totaled 132 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 11 pass deflections, 1 fumble recovery and 1 forced fumble.
The thing with Jewell is that he is slightly undersized and does not have the athletic traits you look for in a linebacker, but his instincts are top notch. His football intelligence and awareness on the field often make up for these issues. He’s one of those high-motor, high IQ, instinct guys who will always be in the right spot and around the ball. Those tackle numbers he put up through college show just that.
I worry if his athleticism will make him a liability in pass coverage in the NFL and if his size will be an issue if he is manned up against bigger tight ends. However, it is hard to count against Jewell.
I think he would be a solid addition to the Broncos linebacker position. I would like them to go after a more athletic linebacker, but would not be upset if they got someone like Jewell who has great instincts and a nose for the football.
