There is a serious art to trolling.

Whether on the Internet or in person, those who know how to do it best should be applauded. Some of the most skilled trolls are comedians. They’re quick on their feet and know how to go after the gut punch.

As fate would have it, Adam Malnati and I had one such guest on the latest MHR Radio Podcast. Comedian, author and huge Denver Broncos fan Brandt Tobler not only possesses the art of trolling, he gave some tips.

Here’s one of them.

As Brandt told us, when you see a fan wearing a No. 4 Brett Favre jersey, especially when it is associated with the Green Bay Packers, you yell, “Brett Favre, ahh Brett Favre.” The fan gets all excited and thinks you have a bond. “Yeah, Brett Favre.” That is until you drop the gut punch by finishing with, “All-time interceptions leader!” That’s when they flip and say, “Well, who is your team?” You say, “I’m a Broncos fan.” And they’ll say, “Favre, he’s way better than Elway.”

That’s when you throw yet another gut punch, courtesy of Brandt: “I don’t know, maybe you’re right. You know what would have been cool? If they just could have met up in the biggest game in the world. Maybe even have Brett Favre be like a 14-point favorite. I don’t know, it would be crazy if they actually met up and played in a Super Bowl and we wouldn’t have to have this argument. We would just know who was better.”

As Brandt said, put that in your pocket, Broncos fans because it’s such a great bait. You lure them in with the “Brett Favre” and sock them with the “all-time interceptions leader.”

This is one of the many reasons this podcast was so much fun. Brandt talked about his fandom, told some great stories, and extended a remarkable ticket offer that fans who listen to the podcast should take advantage of.
