With Case Keenum elevating the level of quarterback play in Denver, one thing is becoming increasingly apparent: Paxton Lynch isn’t getting it.
Reading defenses, passes in the dirt, overthrows, erratic play, and interceptions show the growth that Bill Musgrave, Vance Joseph, and John Elway are hoping to see isn’t presenting itself in the play of their third-year quarterback.
How is it possible that Lynch finds himself losing in competition to a seventh round draft pick yet again? By all accounts, 3rd string quarterback Chad Kelly outplayed Paxton on Sunday.
One bad day of training camp does not a career make, but this is year three. Where Lynch finds himself today just can’t happen. At what point do we declare that we’ve seen enough?
Allow me to raise my hand. Folks, Paxton isn’t going to suddenly get it. There’s no light bulb waiting to be turned on. An epiphany isn’t coming. If Lynch hasn’t a prayer of becoming the guy, why bother allowing him to be a guy any longer?
Admitting defeat may be uncomfortable, but turning the page on Paxton Lynch may be the wisest move. While the press has raved about Case Keenum in camp, what’s unsaid is how frustrated players (forget the fans) were with Lynch and others last season. Would turning the offense over to an unknown veteran hurt morale more than turning the team over to Paxton Lynch? Okay, I hear you, what veteran?
Ask me after all the cuts have been announced.
Let me put it another way... Holding a high draft pick like Lynch accountable for poor play and unmet expectations would send a stronger message than allowing an ineffective Lynch to take up space in the quarterbacks room simply becasue of where he was drafted.
As much as it kills me to say it, the Paxton Lynch boat is pulling away from the dock. Let’s hope the Broncos don’t realize too late and abandon ship.
