The Denver Broncos suffered their first loss in week 3 to the Baltimore Ravens. Although the Broncos started off fast, their energy simmered and the team collapsed. While adjustments can be made to fuel the offense, LT Garrett Bolles has revealed to be a draft bust.
In 2017, Garett Bolles was the most penalized offensive lineman in the NFL. This year Bolles maintains 3 penalties, all of which occurred in the second half of games against Oakland and Baltimore. All 3 penalties this year are recorded as holding, which is generous compared to unnecessary roughness. Bolles lack of technique forces cheap angles, resulting in blatant body slams directly in front of referees.
In 2017, the Broncos passed on OT Ryan Ramczyk drafted 32nd overall to the New Orleans Saints. Ramczyk who plays right tackle, continues to gain respect among the NFL as he blocks for future hall of fame QB Drew Brees. Ramczyk and Bolles will always be linked in the same draft class, but are on separate paths in their careers.
This season, the Broncos plan was to move veteran OG Ronald Leary back to his preferred left side, which would aid Bolles as LT. However, Leary continues to battle injury and maintain his own caliber let alone monitor Bolles.
Bolles lack of awareness, and undisciplined technique makes the Broncos Offense specifically QB Case Keenum very vulnerable. Bolles' out of control behavior after the whistle has also become a concern for Broncos Head Coach Vance Joseph.
NFL Analyst and 3-time World Champion OL Mark Schlereth has called Bolles a "detriment," to the Broncos and has questioned his status as a player in the NFL. On his daily radio show, "Schlereth and Evans," Mark explains that while athletic, Bolles is not a football player.
Broncos Country knows that John Elway is stubborn to admit mistakes. It took Elway just shy of 3 seasons to label former 1st Round QB Paxton Lynch a bust. All the while Lynch could barely see the field. In this case, Bolles remains the starting LT that continues to digress during live NFL games.
The 2018 Denver Broncos cannot afford to delay the fact that Garett Bolles is a first round bust, and they must move on.
