Reason #19: Steve Atwater was the best free safety Wade Phillips ever coached

What else is left to say about the Broncos legend? Get the Smilin’ Assassin to Canton, Ohio!

When Wade Phillips speaks, you listen.

What he said about Denver Broncos legend Steve Atwater stopped me in my tracks. Phillips was the defensive coordinator for the Broncos from Atwater’s rookie season in 1989 until 1992, and then Denver’s head coach from 1993-94. Steve joined Adam Malnati and me on the MHR Radio Podcast to talk about his candidacy and what it would mean to him to get inducted with Pat Bowlen.

So who better to comment on Atwater than Phillips? I reached out to an intermediary for a quote in September 2017. In typical Phillips fashion, it was succinct and to the point. The next reason on our list of 27 reasons in 27 days that Atwater should get inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame is Phillips’ quote.

“Steve is the best free safety I ever coached (40 years and counting),” he said.
