Update: Drew Lock to get 75% of the reps over Brandon Allen

The Denver Broncos are likely to split the quarterback reps in practice this week between Drew Lock and Brandon Allen to see who will be the starter.

Update: Vic Fangio has said Lock will get 75% of the reps in practice, which completely changes the narrative. If it were 50-50, I would think Allen would be the starter. This news surely gives the impression that the starting job is Lock’s to lose this week.

This split makes me a feel a lot better. Trotting Allen out there as the starter for another week after the kind of run he has had would be more damning to Lock than anyone. Lock needs to start this game and let the team move forward with evaluation from there.

Original Story: John Elway on KOA Radio today announced that the Denver Broncos would probably split the quarterback reps in practice this week between Brandon Allen and rookie Drew Lock.

As a fan of the game, this news is bothersome. I’m trying to think of when splitting reps between two quarterbacks has ever worked out - especially between two quarterbacks who vitally need those reps to succeed in games.

Allen, if he wins this practice battle, will be setup to fail in the game and will ultimately lose the job to Lock at halftime or something anyway. And if Lock can’t beat out a guy who has had six straight atrocious quarters of quarterbacking...

At this point, I kind of need to see Drew Lock play for 4-5 games. As we all begin to look ahead to the 2020 NFL Draft, those games could be the difference between me pushing for a quarterback in the Top 5 or a tackle. My gut says we’ll be needing that Top 5 quarterback long before we need an elite tackle, but we shall see.
