In our first edition of our annual offseason roundtable discussions, the Mile High Report staff discussed the Denver Broncos’ biggest needs to address in free agency. It was no surprise that finding an impact inside linebacker, a safety for the future, as well as an upgrade at right tackle were the most sought after priorities.
Our loyal readers felt a little bit different, prioritizing a starting boundary cornerback to replace Bradley Roby who will most certainly find a new home in a few weeks. I can definitely see why that would be and have no issue with the majority of voters feeling that way. The Broncos’ cupboard is a bit bare at the position and they certainly will need to add someone in free agency (and the 2019 NFL Draft) to bolster the position.
But who are the players at those positions of need that the franchise should make a significant push for in a few weeks? For our second round table discussion, I asked the Mile High Report staff — “What players would you like the Denver Broncos to target in free agency?”
Joe Rowles:
If Jimmy Smith is cut by the Ravens, I hope he’s considered. He’d be coming over from one of the more diverse coverage schemes in the league and would offer Fangio schematic versatility as he’s also capable of manning up with a receiver.
I’d also hope the Broncos find a way to bring back Billy Turner. His positional versatility and relatively low cost would be a good fit going forward.
Lastly, I love Adrian Amos. Safety doesn’t seem like a screaming need in the same way corner or OL do, but Willie Parks was at his best as a dimebacker and Justin Simmons hasn’t proven he’s a consistent performer in deep coverage. Amos would immediately solidify the Broncos against the deep ball; something that was a glaring hole down the middle in 2018.
Scotty Payne:
I’d like to see at least one of C.J. Mosley, Adrian Amos, or Landon Collins to be added. Otherwise, Pierre Desir would be a solid addition to the secondary at cornerback and Ja’Wuan James would be an upgrade at right tackle.
Taylor Kothe:
Here is my brief Four Steps to a Successful Free Agency, Denver Broncos 2019 Edition: Step 1: Sign the aforementioned ILB Mosley. Step 2: Sign TE Jared Cook. Step 3: Sign RT Ja’Wuan James Step 4: Sign Fangio’s preferred starting quality CB. That would be my dream scenario.
Pete Baron:
Without question it’s Mosley. He could very well get franchise tagged or resigned by Baltimore, but I’d love for us to try to grab him if he hits the open market. If not, maybe make a play for Bryce Callahan from Chicago to be our nickel corner so we can have Chris Harris Jr. on the best wide receiver every play.
Ian St. Clair:
Mosely, Amos (or Collins), and James. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, Elway and Fangio do with Callahan, and I didn’t list defensive end for biggest needs, but keep an eye on Aaron Lynch. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers when Fangio was there, and he played for the Chicago Bears with Fangio last season. Adam Malnati and I discussed who the Broncos should target on the MHR Radio Podcast (Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Stitcher).
It appears that Mosley, Amos, Collins and James are the most desired names from the staff as primary targets. All of them are impact starters who would prove to be significant upgrades to the Broncos’ crop of talent on the roster. It’s unlikely that the Broncos would be able to reel in more than one or two of these players, given how many other teams will be interested and the contracts they will demand. However, there is no harm in setting the bar high and hoping for the best.
