Per Troy Renck of Denver 7, Stewart said, ”I am in a good place. Elway called me, and let me know they were going to release me. I have nothing but respect. I loved my time in Denver. But it was time for a change.”
The move will free up a few million in cap space as he was due $4.97 million this year. He’ll be a free agent upon his release.
It was certainly a good run. Stewart, 30, joined the team during the 2015 offseason and was the catalyst that completed the puzzle of one of the all-time greatest defenses in NFL history. A defense that ran the tables against two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks and Super Bowl champions in Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady, then took down the reigning NFL MVP for the title.
That defense was special, but the number of starters remaining from that team has dwindled down to three with just Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr, and Derek Wolfe remaining.
Is releasing Darian Stewart the right move?
