Here we go.
As we know, cornerback Chris Harris Jr. has been sitting out the voluntary workouts so far in hopes of getting a contract extension from the Broncos. However, General Manager John Elway continues to insist that he is tabling this matter until after the draft.
Well, it appears that Elway threw some gasoline on the fire with his comments about Harris’s situation during the Broncos pre-draft press conference earlier today. Elway told reporters that just because they are going to talk about a potential deal, doesn’t mean that a deal will happen.
“I don’t have time right now. I’m busy with the draft. We’ll talk about Chris. He’s under contract, so we’ll talk about that when the draft is over. When I say this, I said we’re going to talk about it. It doesn’t mean we’re going to do it.”
Elway was also asked if he has considered trading Harris because of these demands. He told reporters that “he hasn’t thought about that” and that he will talk to Harris after the draft.
“I haven’t even thought about that, so no. We have not gotten there. Like I said, we’ll talk about Chris’ contract when the draft’s over and see what they’re looking for.”
So will Elway start thinking about trading Harris now? I think he very well may.
Elway is notorious for “his way or the highway” negotiating. He even asked GOAT Peyton Manning to take a pay cut, so I do not see him paying Harris who is entering his age 30 year. Also keep in mind that they signed slot corner Bryce Callahan who basically replaced what Harris already did well.
I just don’t see Elway budging here and likely we see a trade by the end of the week. Ideally, the Broncos could get a premium pick in return, but it likely will be a 3rd or 4th round selection if a trade does go down.
Could he still be re-signed and I am just being a negative nancy? It’s possible, but I don’t see this ending without him being traded.
Update: Chris Harris is asking for $15 million per year from the Broncos.
As first reported by 9News, ominous turn on Chris Harris Jr. front in recent days. According to a source, Harris has requested either a contract of at least $15 million APY or a trade. Trade first reported by @AdamSchefter. But request was trade or deal of $15M+ per. #9sports

If these demands are true, Harris is gone.
Update number two: 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis is saying that Harris is NOT getting $15 million per year from the Broncos and that a trade is likely best for both sides.
I don't think Elway will go $15M+/year with Harris, who got $1M bonus in March and at $7.9M now in final year of deal. With draft coming up, trade may be best for Elway and Harris. #9sports
