Predicting the New Broncos Numbers

We know Fant will wear 87, but what about Lock and the rest?

Have to wonder if Lock will buy 3

Consider this the nerd in me, but I’ve always been one of those gamers who hate when players in Madden are given retired jersey’s. I’ll spend an hour or two after every offseason to make sure this doesn’t occur (at least for teams I care about) and also decide on numbers for my favorite new Broncos. My brother has always made fun of me for it, but for some reason I really dig certain numbers and want my best players to look sharp.

This all to say that Mini-camp is fast approaching and it’s unlikely the rookies will wear blank jerseys, so when will the new numbers be released? I’ve seen a few members of Broncos Country wonder just that.

Most assume Drew Lock will wear #3 because that’s what he wore dating back to high school, but will he need to buy the number from Colby Wadman? Longtime NFL punter Jeff Feagles is infamous for cashing in on his jersey number. Perhaps the second year punter will do the same.

If Lock doesn’t receive 3, what could he be? The numbers that are currently available to the Broncos new potential franchise quarterback are 1,2,4,6,15, and 16. I was speculating about this with MHR’s own Tim Lynch and his response was “ew.” I get it, 4 was most recently worn by Case Keenum and it’s hard to see 15 and not think of Tim Tebow and Brandon Marshall. Personally I’ll always think of Jake Plummer when I see 16. 1 and 2 have never struck me as great quarterback numbers.

But I digress.

As of now, only Noah Fant is the only rookie with a jersey locked up. He’ll be donning Eddie McCaffery / Eric Decker’s old 87. For the fun of it, I thought I would take a stab at guessing who ends up with what.

Brett Rypien - 4

Dekoda Watson - 56

Juwann Winfree - 89

Billy Winn - 90

Brian Wallace - 61

Jake Rodgers - 66

Dalton Risner - 75, though I think he may receive 71 from Austin Schlottmann.

Mike Purcell - 95

John Leglue - 73

Dre’Mont Jones - 93

Trey Johnson - 39

Jaylen Johnson - 98

Devontae Jackson - 48

Justin Hollins - 54

Romell Gurrier - 16

Ahmad Gooden - 91

Austin Fort - 86

Joe Dineen - 59

Jake Brendell - 64

Taylor Bertolet - 6

Trinity Benson - 83

Quinn Bailey - 75

My best guess is Drew Lock dons 3 in the NFL and Wadman settles on one of the other numbers, perhaps Jason Elam’s 1?
