Broncos’ ‘no-nonsense’ coach cancels final minicamp practice to hold ‘Field Day’

Not even joking - and it’s so awesome.

Vic Fangio has been “all football” since joining the team as its new head coach, and just about every player who has been asked, has noted his serious focus in an atmosphere that rivals training camp.

In fact, there has even been a lot of talk about how much Fangio likes his defense to “win practice” because he’s that intense and that competitive.

Joe Flacco got a taste of it early on.

“A couple of weeks ago we did a little situation, and I threw a little touchdown pass to Tim [Patrick] in the back of the end zone. The period was supposed to be over, we were supposed to be in twos, and Vic’s like, ‘Alright, run it back.’ [I said] ‘Alright we’ll try to win; I guess we’ll beat you again.’” Flacco noted.

“You can tell he’s a head coach, but he’s obviously got that fire to be a great defensive play caller and get that defense where he wants it to be,” Flacco added. “He wants to win every single day, every single time.”

So when the no-nonsense coach cancelled the final day of minicamp Thursday and instead held a “Field Day,” players weren’t sure they should trust it.

Will Parks and Justin Simmons went on camera to explain how it went down.

Fangio put a sign on the film screen reading, “No practice,” but none of the players thought he was serious about something like that.

“No one believed it, so it was dead quiet,” Simmons said, as Parks chimed in, “DEAD. QUIET.”

But when Fangio assured them he wasn’t playin,’ his team cheered.

And then they found out he had a field day in store with teams - and even team names - already decided.

Based on the Twitter reaction, Fangio’s change of plans was a huge hit.

This is how team chemistry is built - players giving their all for a hard-ass coach who knows when it’s time to work and when it’s time to play.

“Coach Vic is the man for allowing us to have fun with each other today,” Parks said via Twitter. “We’ve been working in so many ways to get better this offseason. Us as players appreciate this. It’s going to go a long way. Let’s go and get it done this year. I’m excited.”

I’m still mad there was no dizzy bat race, but I’m loving everything else about this day.
