It was a somewhat surprising move to see the Broncos pick up Brett Rypien as an undrafted free agent after the 2019 NFL Draft. They had Joe Flacco. They traded up to pick up Drew Lock. They already had Kevin Hogan on the roster.
But they see something in Rypien worth working on, so we’ll get to hopefully see some of his NFL development up close in this year’s training camp.
We close with the play of the day, Brett Rypien hitting Khalfani Muhammad deep on a wheel route near the right pylon at the goal line.

Rypien joined the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of college with a signing bonus of $10k. He’s got nothing to lose and a good relationship with Rich Scangarello, so the Broncos are the best team for him to work with in his bid to be an NFL QB.
It is early, but Drew Lock isn't ready for Sunday's quite yet. Brett Rypien by contrast has looked good, but both QBs are facing third and fourth string defenders.

The Good
While Rypien didn’t necessarily face the stiffest of competition in his college career, he put up prolific numbers with the Boise State Broncos. He’s very comfortable running an offense under center (a rarity in today’s QBs coming out of college).
Brett Rypien getting work with the 2nd team offense and looking like he belongs. Completed 3 passes after taking a sack and making a bad throw following the would be sack on his first play. #BroncosCountry

The Bad
Rypien doesn’t have a big arm. That’s the largest knock on him coming out of college. He’s a guy that has to put an arc on a pass to get it to the third level, which is going to require a lot more accuracy of him on those throws.

Brett Rypien’s roster status
I see Rypien as a likely practice squad player for another year. I just don’t see any way he’s going to make enough of a showing that the Broncos will use a roster spot on a third QB going into the season.
That being said, I’m excited to see what this young guy can do. He’s got the makings of an NFL QB...he just needs to make his shot count when he gets it.
