The Denver Broncos (1-1) will host the San Francisco 49ers (1-0) in their third of five preseason games in 2019. They held two joint practice sessions at UCHealth Training Center on Friday and Saturday, with the latter session being fairly chippy with some fighting between the two teams.
Former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was on hand this week with ties to both teams as his son Kyle is currently the head coach of the 49ers. He knows current head coach Vic Fangio quite well and his impressions of Fangio seem to align with the Fangio we’ve come to know throughout Broncos training camp.
“I know Vic, he’s a great football coach, a no-nonsense guy that understands the game,” Shanahan said. “Being around him, trying to game plan him for years and years—I just like the way he handles himself. He’s kind of like a man’s man. There’s no B.S. He gets to the point. I think players will follow him very quickly.”
Shanahan went on to speak highly of Broncos new offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello as well. Broncos’ President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway also alluded to the fact that he consulted Mike Shanahan during their pursuit of Scangarello this offseason.
“I talked to Mike to about Rich and what he thought about Rich,” Elway said. “I had a chance to sit—we went through an eight-hour interview with Rich and really liked what he was. Obviously, Mike gave me some input. It was also hard to get him out of San Francisco because of how much they liked him and respected him as a coach. We are fortunate that they allowed us to talk to him.”
The Mike Shanahan ties to the 2019 Broncos are quite strong. In many ways, the 49ers and Broncos are coached by very similar offensive philosophies now, but it might be the talent on the Broncos defense that sets these two teams apart this season.
Here is how to watch.

Matchup History
The Broncos and 49ers have shared a long history of preseason scrimmage. This game will mark the 40th time the two teams have squared off in a preseason contest. The Broncos hold a 22-17 record advantage, but hold a 13-4 advantage since 1995. You may recall that 1995 preseason game. It happened in Tokyo, Japan and one rookie by the name of Terrell Davis went from roster bubble to fast track to starter in one special teams play.

In this weeks’ Broncos & Bratwurst, Kevin Gillikin reviewed the Broncos 22-14 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in their second preseason game. He saw baby steps in the way of progress from the team.
The Something Something Broncos podcast talked about the tight end position, but Jess Place also ranted to Tim Lynch and Laurie Lattimore-Volkmann about the Broncos mobile ticketing system - which might be of greater interest for fans heading into this season.
