Jaguars at Broncos first quarter recap

The Denver Broncos are up 7-3 over the Jacksonville Jaguars after the first quarter. Here’s a recap of the action.

The Denver Broncos named Andy Janovich, Courtland Sutton, and Todd Davis the team captains for this game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. They lost the opening coin toss, though, and the Jaguars deferred to the second half.

Joe Flacco and the offense began their first drive from their own 22-yard line. Flacco rolled out to his left and hit Emmanuel Sanders on a crossing route to the 35-yard line on first down.

After a short run by Phillip Lindsay and a quick out to Courtland Sutton, the Broncos were faced with a third and four. Flacco, from the shotgun, hit Sutton on a shallow crossing route who turned it up field got a 10-yard gain and a first down.

Two plays later, the Broncos were again faced with a third down. Needing two yards, they pitched it outside to Lindsay who could not get to the edge to bring out the punt unit. Garett Bolles was supposed to lead the way, but he dodged two defenders and put his hands on no one.

Colby Wadman angled a high punt that was downed at the one yard line by Devontae Harris to pin rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew deep.

A quarterback sneak on first down and a four yard gain by Leonard Fornette gave the Jaguars some breathing room with a third and four. A false start penalty pushed the Jaguars back three yards where Minshew went deep to Chris Conley, which was overthrown.

The punt was solid, but Dionte Spencer was able to get a short return in out near midfield to set the Broncos up with excellent field position.

On the first play, Lindsay broke to the right for for a huge gain for 28 yards and on the very next play Flacco hit rookie Noah Fant on a screen pass who broke a tackle on his way to a 25-yard touchdown and the lead.

Broncos 7, Jaguars 0.

The Jaguars got things going out of their next drive with two quick first downs in their first three plays to set themselves up at the Broncos 45-yard line. Two plays later, Leonard Fournette was stuffed then burst through a hole for another first down and a 10-yard gain.

On the next play, the Jaguars got a defensive pass interference call that was decline since the receiver caught it and gain another 10 yards down to the Broncos 11-yard line.

After a short two yard gain, Minshew went for his tight end in the end zone who was hit hard with the pass broken up to setup a third and eight from the Broncos 9-yard line. Minshew hit Fornettee in the flat where he was met and tackled by Todd Davis to force the field goal attempt.

Broncos 7, Jaguars 3.

Lindsay rushed outside for four yards on the Broncos first play of the next drive, but Flacco threw back-to-back incompletions to ensure a quick three and out.

Von Miller, yes that guy, exploded off the edge on first down to get his first sack of the season and his 99th of his career.

After an incompletion, Minshew was faced with a third and 17. Bradley Chubb flushed him out of the pocket where he bounced a pass off Fournette’s hands to force a punt.

Royce Freeman got a three yard gain on first down, then Flacco was absolutely crushed on play action as he went to throw for the incompletion. On third and seven, Flacco found Freeman on a slant for the first down to bring the first quarter to a close.
