Can we pump the brakes on the Drew Lock hate?

Ignore the stats geeks on Drew Lock...he looks like a 2nd year guy who’s learning to me.

This fan base loves them some quarterback drama.

They almost love it more than stats geeks love to be wrong and bloviate. I’ve got a ton of respect for the guys at footballoutsiders.com and for others on our blog or elsewhere that pour their heart into reviewing football. It is our passion after all. We love football and cheering for our teams. But at the end of their article looking over the latest Broncos game (which has a lot of excellent points), the author goes full on hot take with suggesting Elway should start looking for a different QB.

So just to be serious...we’re talking about a QB making his (checks my notes...) 8th start in the NFL? And he’s on his what, 6th offensive coordinator in the past 6 years of his career, right?

Look, I get it. We see guys like Patrick Mahomes (a freak outlier) come in and light the NFL on fire and now all of a sudden when Lock (who played a great game last week) has a QBR of under 40 we’re nit picking him into oblivion?

It doesn’t work that way, stat geeks. Use your eyes and watch the film. The guy is learning still and from what I’m seeing, Pat Shurmur isn’t asking him to go through 3 read progressions hardly ever.

Let’s all just sit back and see what he does over the course of the season. If this past week was any indication, he may actually give you some QBR numbers that will be more to your liking.

PICK NO. 15: WR JERRY JEUDY, DENVER BRONCOS

2020 overall grade: 66.4

Jerry Jeudy had a fairly quiet game this week against the New England Patriots, even as Drew Lock had his best performance in the NFL (albeit one that won’t be reflected in the box score). Jeudy was targeted five times, catching two of those passes for first downs but dropping one target to bring his total for the season to four.
