Four games left to go in the 2020 season for the Denver Broncos. They will take on the Carolina Panthers on the road this week. While both teams are 4-8, the Broncos strength of schedule has been considerably harder this season.

Game Preview

The single biggest key to victory for Denver will be the arm and decision-making of one Drew Lock. Turnovers killed the Broncos chances of a huge upset last week and that issue has hamstrung their overall ability to win games quite a bit this season. Head Coach Vic Fangio was asked about the turnovers and whether or not the root cause is the decision-making of the quarterback throwing them or a combination of factors.

“It’s all of that,” Fangio said. “The bulk of our turnovers have been interceptions and every one kind of has its own individual story. Some of it’s been decision making, some of it’s been throwing under duress, some of it could be route related—guys weren’t on the same page. But in any case, we’ve had too many and we need to cut them down and eliminate them.”

If Lock can do that and take care of the football, then the Broncos look like they are the better team on paper this week. They just have to limit the mistakes and play sound football. A strong finish to an otherwise disappointing 2020 season is at stake.

Here’s how to watch.

Broncos Betting Odds

According to SportsBetting.com, the Broncos are three-point underdogs to the Panthers. Both teams have winning records against the spread this year, so it’ll be a battle of spread beaters to win this game.

Matchup History

This will be just the seventh time these two teams have met dating back to 1995 when the Panthers joined the NFL. The Broncos only blemish on their 5-1 record was a 30-10 defeat in 2008. Of course, we all know and remember Super Bowl 50 when the greatest defense in Broncos history ran roughshod through two quarterbacks with a combined 8 Super Bowl rings in the AFC playoffs and the 2015 NFL MVP in Cam Newton to take the title.

Hot Reads

Fan Sentiment

For the first time this season, fan confidence bounced upwards after a loss. The Broncos defense contained the Chiefs offense to a season-low 22 points and the offense scored enough points to take a lead into the fourth quarter. It was good progress. Enough so, that 49% of React Survey respondents this week feel confident in the direction of the team.

Broncos Podcasts

On MHR Radio this week, Ian St. Clair and Adam Malnati just don’t know what to make of these Denver Broncos. The rollercoaster week to week of complete ineptitude to looking like they are a good football team is often maddening.

Cover 2 Broncos with Jeff Essary and Joe Rowles felt the Broncos closed the gap a bit against the Chiefs. They didn’t get blown out and frustrated Patrick Mahomes all night long. Those are all good things.

On this week’s episode of the SSB Podcast, Laurie Lattimore-Volkmann, Jess Place, and myself mostly discussed quarterbacks. I was feeling a bit down that day and was more negative than I feel here the night before gameday, but oh well.
