The Denver Broncos need cornerback help, but could they also need slot cornerback help? They signed Bryce Callahan last season to fill that role, but he never saw the field as a nagging foot injury kept him out all year.
If Denver were to go after a guy like Brian Poole it could mean they are looking to move on from Callahan’s 3-yr deal sooner rather than later.
What kind of contract could he get
Poole had a breakout season last year with the New York Jets and could be looking to top Callahan’s deal. He could nab somewhere in the range of a four-year, $32 million deal. That kind of deal would also ensure Callahan would likely be on the way out in Denver as well.
Why the Broncos should sign him
He is basically this years’ Bryce Callahan without the injury issues. He graded out nicely with Pro Football Focus at a 79.0 while playing heavily from the slot position. Frankly, with Callahan’s injury history, Poole might actually be a better long-term investment for Denver.
Why the Broncos shouldn’t sign him
They already have Callahan and committed to him through 2020. There is an out in the final year of his deal in 2021, but if they went after Poole in March there would ultimately be no reason to keep Callahan even through 2020 and would need to eat the dead cap hit.
Final word
I’d pass. Callahan dealt with kind of a freak injury issue and while he does have a history of being unable to remain healthy, the Broncos are invested in him for at least another season. Adding Poole to the mix would only subtract from a position that is already filled in 2020 and would do little to address the outside cornerback help they desperately need to fill.
What do you think Broncos Country?
