ESPN’s Mel Kiper mocks Josh Jones to Broncos

New, comments

Mel Kiper thinks the Garett Bolles experiment needs to end and it would if the Denver Broncos were to draft Josh Jones fifteenth overall.

The Denver Broncos could go a lot of different ways in the 2020 NFL Draft and the least interesting might be going with an offensive tackle - especially wish so much other offensive talent expected to be on the board when Denver selects. However, ESPN’s Mel Kiper thinks they need to get moving on from 2017’s first-round bust in Garett Bolles.

He has the Broncos selecting Josh Jones out of Houston. He would present an immediate upgrade over Bolles who has led the NFL in holding penalties in all three seasons he has been in the league.

It’s probably time to end the Garett Bolles era at left tackle in Denver; the 2017 first-round pick led the league in holding penalties in each of the past three seasons, and he hasn’t gotten better. Jones, a four-year starter for the Cougars, is rising after dominating at Senior Bowl practices. He has the potential to be an All-Pro left tackle. The Broncos also have needs in the secondary and could lose a couple starters along the defensive line to free agency.

While the pick is boring, moving on from a player who hasn’t shown any improvement and is rapidly approaching 30 years old might be a smart tactical long-term move for Denver. The downside is that it won’t help the offense close the gap much on the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs who have Patrick Mahomes scoring at will in games.

Given that situation alone, it might be best to let Bolles lead the NFL in holding calls for one more season and go get a dynamic offensive playmaker with that fifteenth overall selection.

What do you think, Broncos Country?
