According to the Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala, the Broncos have had an official meeting with Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims. The news comes days after the Athletic’s draft guru Dane Brugler reported that he was hearing talk that the Broncos were interested in Mims.
Can confirm the Broncos did have a video call with former Baylor WR Denzel Mims. One to keep an eye on for Denver. He’s had a heck of a pre-draft run with his Senior Bowl showing and combine performance.— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) April 15, 2020
Mims has had a meteoric rise up Draft boards since the 2019 season came to an end. After completing a senior season where he caught 66 passes for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns, he proceeded to dominate the Reese’s Senior Bowl. He was just getting started.
At the NFL Combine in March, the 6’2” 207 lb Mims ran a 4.38 40-yard dash as well as a devilish 6.66 3-Cone. In addition to his speed, he showed off his wicked explosiveness with a 38” vertical jump. I thought he was faster than many were giving him credit for, but the Bear had a historically great workout.
Denzel Mims is a WR prospect in the 2020 draft class out of Baylor.— Kent Lee Platte (@MathBomb) February 28, 2020
He posted an elite #RAS with great size, elite speed, elite explosiveness, okay agility at the WR position.https://t.co/PLgnf7a6oE pic.twitter.com/947UaIATO2
For all of the excitement about his pre-draft process, it’s his film that left my infatuated. He displays underrated route running with an ability to win above the rim and the physicality to play bully ball. He flashes late hands and the kind of contested catches to make his next quarterback very happy. He’s also capable of making acrobatic plays along the sideline.
If that all sounds too good to be true, it’s because he hasn’t done it on an every snap basis just yet. His biggest weakness right now is how he needs to continue refining his route running to mislead defensive backs. He also has some concentration drops .
What helps me to overlook Mims’ adequate route running is his growth throughout his college career in this regard, his Senior Bowl reps, and his interviews since. He told Pro Football Focus’ Austin Gayle that while he doesn’t consider it a strength yet, it will be a strength of his game. The thought should send shivers down cornerbacks’ spines.
It’s no secret that Mims is my favorite receiver in this NFL Draft class. After studying watching how Courtland Sutton grew under Coach Azzanni’s tutelage from 2018 to 2019, I truly believe that adding the Baylor Bear to Denver’s wide receiver room would give the Broncos one of the most dangerous pairs in the league. Add in Noah Fant and Drew Lock would have three gigantic elite athletes to torture opponents.
Would you be happy if the Broncos drafted Denzel Mims?
