2020 NFL Draft: AFC West Review

New, comments

Did the Denver Broncos close the gap enough on the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2020 NFL Draft? We think so.

So who won the 2020 NFL Draft in the AFC West? This tweet aggregated all of the NFL Grades from all of the top outlets and the results were decidedly in the Denver Broncos favor. I like these consensus results as it provides us with an idea of how well Denver managed their process and what talent they got with each pick.

The grades were tallied into a total GPA, which we will rank through the classes below. So let’s review each class and we can all vote for the Broncos at the end!

6 181 Netane Muti OG Fresno State Scouting Report Video
7 252 Tyrle Cleveland WR Florida Scouting Report Video
7 254 Derrek Tuszka EDGE North Dakota State Scouting Report Video

GPA: 3.45

Best Pick: Jerry Jeudy

Best Value: Netane Muti

The Broncos added speed everywhere, but most importantly they rounded out the offense with so many new weapons that I’m not even sure how the ball is going to get spread around next season. Jerry Jeudy is one of the best route runners to come out in years, while KJ Hamler could take it to the house on any given play. I would not want to be an opposing defense against Denver next year.

Chargers 2020 Draft Class

1 6 Justin Hebert QB Oregon
1 23 Kenneth Murray ILB Oklahoma
4 112 Joshua Kelley RB UCLA
5 151 Joe Reed WR Virginia
6 186 Alohi Gilman S Notre Dame
7 220 K.J. Hill WR Ohio State

GPA: 2.88

Best Pick: Kenneth Murray

Best Value: K.J. Hill

I’m not a huge fan of the Los Angeles Chargers draft class. I probably would have ranked the Kansas City Chiefs above them, but that’s not where they fell on the consensus. The Justin Hebert pick will be interesting to watch as he was a quarterback many thought John Elway would covet had he not picked up Drew Lock. The best pick, though, is probably linebacker Kenneth Murray who they picked up in later rounds, and the fact that they got K.J. Hill in the seventh is a huge steal.

2 63 Willie Gay Jr. OLB Mississippi State
3 96 Lucas Niang OT TCU

5 177 Mike Danna DE Central Michigan
7 237 Thakarius Keyes CB Tulane

GPA: 2.79

Best Pick: Clyde Edwards-Helaire

Best Value: Lucas Niang

The Chiefs didn’t have all that much draft capital, but I felt they hit every pick on Day 1 and 2. While the Broncos had a better draft class, they didn’t close the gap as much as I would have hoped. Their draft class is exactly what you’d expect from a defending world champion with the best quarterback in the league not even in his prime yet. They are going to be annoying us for at least the next couple of years.

4 109 John Simpson OG Clemson
4 139 Amik Robertson CB Louisiana Tech

GPA: 2.32

Best Pick: Henry Ruggs III

Best Value: Henry Ruggs III

Saving the best for last, we can LOL the Las Vegas Raiders for reaching and head scratching most of their picks. I liked Henry Ruggs III coming out and would have been fine if the Broncos had drafted him at 15, but previous draft classes have proven that speedy first round wide receivers have a very high bust rate. The risk is there, but looking over the rest of the Raiders draft class has me seeing Ruggs as the best pick and the best value. It’ll be fun to see them flop next season.
