Steve Atwater describes Hall of Fame moment, looks ahead to induction

The Broncos legend joined the MHR Radio Podcast to talk about the Hall of Fame, what it’s been like in these crazy times and if he’s buying into the hype for Drew Lock.

Steve Atwater was like a kid on Christmas morning.

If you recall the video footage of Steve getting the knock on his hotel room door from Hall of Fame President David Baker, there’s a moment toward the end when Steve does a little hop. As I described the scene to him, I told him it reminded me of a little boy on Christmas morning as he got his first glimpse of what awaited under the tree.

On the MHR Radio Podcast, Steve smiled and said it was like he got the bike he asked for.

It was just one of many great moments Steve shared with Adam and me. We were fortunate to be joined by the Denver Broncos Hall of Fame safety.

We asked him how it felt to finally get the knock on the door, if it’s hit him he’s a Hall of Famer and how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the moment for him.

We also discussed the 2020 Broncos.

For those curious, yes, Steve is buying into the hype for Drew Lock and the offense. Steve also told us what Lock has to do to live up to the hype; especially in these wild times when the players aren’t around each other and how difficult that is.

Of course, any conversation that involves Steve always includes a bit on his former teammate Dennis Smith. Smith had a huge role in the development of Steve early in his career and doesn’t get the credit he deserves for how really freaking good he was.

Any opportunity to have Steve join us on the podcast is a special one, but with this being his first appearance on the show as a soon-to-be Hall of Famer, it was extra special.

Hall of Famer Steve Atwater ... it will never get old hearing that.
