The other day, I was showing some old-school Denver Broncos football to my sons in the form of a 1985 game against the Miami Dolphins. As usual, when I turn on old football games, they’ll linger for a bit, but, and you’ll be shocked to hear this, old games just aren’t their thing.
At one point, probably while the boys were focused on Roblox games on their iPad, Andre Townsend swooped in and sacked Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino. “And-Re Town-Send with the sack!” I remember that name! He was pretty good wasn’t he? Why don’t we hear more about him?
Townsend had a very good career in Denver that lasted 7-seasons. In an era that spanned Karl Mecklenburg, Dennis Smith, John Elway, the Three Amigos, Steve Atwater, Simon Fletcher, and others, it’s unfortunate that his is a name tends to be afterthought to these pillars of 1980’s Denver Broncos play.
In 2011, during the lockout offseason, Townsend was selected by MHR as the “Greatest to Wear” his #61.
Andre Townsend DE 1984-90
Drafted by the Broncos in the 2nd round (46th overall) of the 1984 Draft. He appeared in 104 games with 54 starts. He recorded 22 sacks. He recovered 6 fumbles and returned 1 for a touchdown. He was a starter in both Super Bowl XXI and XXII.
For me, as a kid watching the Broncos with my parents on snowy Colorado days, remember the excitement of television announcers when Townsend would make a play. “ANDRE TOWNSEND with the sack!” For whatever reason, it didn’t matter who said it, the exuberance was consistent. How they worked their way through saying it, almost cautiously tagging each syllable in “Andre Townsend,” as though it were some sort of tricky staircase to navigate was something I’ll never forget.
So there you go, your Monday morning Andre. Here’s to you Andre!
