While the future looks like an uphill climb, it also could be an exciting time for the rivalry between the Chiefs and Broncos. On the MHR Radio Podcast, Ian St. Clair and I talked about the impact Mahomes’ contract would have on the Broncos.
Final Patrick Mahomes’ deal:— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) July 6, 2020
10-year extension worth up to $503 million.
It includes $477 in guarantee mechanisms and the ability for Mahomes to have outs if guarantee mechanisms aren’t exercised.
Mahomes was represented on the deal by @chriscabott and @leighsteinberg.
Obviously, John Elway has a pretty big task. Building a team that will be able to compete with the Chiefs won’t be easy. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible. It seems as though Elway and Vic Fangio have already begun working toward that end.
There are two options at this point. Build a defense that can slow down Mahomes and the KC offense, or build an offense that can keep up with the Chiefs. It looks as though Elway and Fangio have opted for both.
Trading for Jurrell Casey and AJ Bouye were moves that should improve the defense. Drafting Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler give the Broncos the speed that will help them compete on the offensive side of the ball.
The battle is under way. The key component that can make this an epic decade of back and forth is Drew Lock. If Lock can become the Broncos franchise QB, and Mahomes can continue his pace as one of the best in the NFL, this rivalry will become the most anticipated in the NFL.
I told Ian that I see Elway and Montana on Monday Night Football, battling for division supremacy year after year. Am I getting ahead of myself? Probably, but the potential is there.
For all the hype surrounding Denver this offseason, this signing is only going to amplify things. Remember, the Broncos have not beaten the Chiefs since the 2015 season. This won’t make reversing those fortunes any easier. It will make it more entertaining.
Take off your orange and blue colored glasses. Think about what Mahomes versus Lock could be. Epic battles twice a season. Back and forth battles for AFC West dominance. As a fan of the NFL, this is an exciting proposition.
Do we want to see the Chiefs continued dominance? Of course not, but would we enjoy the battles between Lock and Mahomes for the next decade plus? I know I would. All it takes is Drew Lock becoming exactly who we hope he will be. Let the fun begin.
