The Denver Broncos were supposed to play the Los Angeles Rams in their brand new Sofi digs in Southern California, but that didn’t happen. What is usually the most relevant of the preseason games, the pivotal third contest, was canceled due to coronavirus concerns.
Two weeks from tonight, the Broncos will take the field at home against the 2019 playoff contender, Tennessee Titans. Just what we’ll be getting that night is still a total mystery. With no preseason to speak of and fewer training camp reports (I know I miss Ian St. Clair’s reports), it will truly be a surprise as to what kind of team is going to show up in Broncos gear on opening night.
One through-line that appears to be manifesting over the last couple practices is that Denver’s offense is struggling against Denver’s Defense. With no preseason games, this is where it gets tricky. Is the offense struggling because the defense is so good? Or is the offense struggling because of the offensive line, young quarterback, or other reasons?
Despite reports of offensive struggles, there is encouraging news that certain players on that side of the ball are doing well. Drew Lock, Albert Okwebanaum, Jake Butt, Jerry Jeudy have all been making plays. Are these flashes of excellence telling about the defense? Are there glaring defensive holes that could bring down Denver’s playoff hopes in 2020?
Without preseason games, we just don’t know. Heck, even with preseason games, we still don’t exactly get the whole picture. The only thing we know for sure is that two weeks from tonight, at 8:10 p.m. MT, the Denver Broncos will play the Tennessee Titans in front of an empty Mile High on ESPN.
It can’t come soon enough.
