Good morning, Broncos Country!

To break away from the quarterback talk, the football world got some sad news earlier this week.

Longtime NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer succumbed to his battle with Alzheimer’s at the age of 77. He may have never been associated with the Denver Broncos over the course of his football life, but the two are intertwined.

In fact, John Elway and Schottenheimer are linked in football history.

From “The Drive” and “The Fumble” to the 14-10 win in the AFC divisional playoffs on the march to Elway’s and Denver’s first Super Bowl, the football story of Elway is incomplete without his rival. If you add that magical Monday Night matchup in Oct. 1994, it’s one of the few instances in which Schottenheimer actually got the better of Elway.

What adds to the beauty and mystique of sports is the rivalries that are created. Elway and the Broncos vs Schottenheimer gave fans some of the most remarkable games and moments in sports’ history.

Whenever Elway and Denver were set to play a Schottenheimer-coached team, you knew you were in for a special game. That you were about to witness history. As a Broncos fan, you knew there was a good chance they would come out on the better end. That fact always made the pre-game feelings a little bit better.

To the creator of Marty Ball, thank you.

You played an integral part in the story of the Broncos.

Broncos Country sends its condolences to the Schottenheimer family, his former coaches and players.

Hopefully we can find a cure for this awful disease.
