George Paton off to a great start in Broncos free agency

Yes, there are still other areas of concern for Denver. But as of now the Broncos have the makings of a heckuva defense and a great start to free agency.

Good morning, Broncos Country!

To say I’m stoked is a slight understatement.

Not only did new Denver Broncos general manager George Paton bring back Von Miller, Shelby Harris, and Justin Simmons, he added two great pieces to the secondary.

The additions of cornerbacks Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller are remarkable moves; especially the Fuller move. If he’s able to recreate the last season he had with Vic Fangio in the 2018 season ... yes, please.

In that season, Fuller had 55 tackles, 21 passes defended and seven interceptions. That season with the Chicago Bears, his passes defended led the NFL and he tied for the league lead in picks. That was enough to earn Fuller First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection.

As I said, get that again in 2021 ... yes, please.

But the fact Paton pulled off that move is hot fudge on top of this offseason sundae so far for Denver. I did not expect the Broncos to pick up the club option on Miller’s contract, get Harris back and extend Simmons. Let alone get that all done in the first week. Perhaps it’s the pessimist in me from the last five seasons. And some may say these were no-brainer moves, but that doesn’t mean Paton shouldn’t get credit for making them.

So when Adam Malnati and I say on the MHR Radio Podcast we’re overjoyed, we are.

Yes, there are still other areas of concern for Denver. But as Paton has said multiple times now, he and the franchise will be patient. They won’t force any moves. So we’ll see what Paton and the Broncos have left in terms of moves. Who knows, as I told Adam on the podcast, perhaps Denver can get Kareem Jackson back.

As of now, the Broncos have the makings of a heckuva defense and a great start to free agency.
