Could the Broncos still have interest in the talented but injured corner?

Virginia Tech held their Pro Day earlier today and the Broncos were among the many teams in attendance. While George Paton was in BYU to see Zach Wilson, the team had a scout in attendance to watch and meet with the prospects. One of the main draws there was cornerback Caleb Farley would many assumed would be a top 10 selection before the news came out about a procedure that was done on his back. Farley met with the media and told reporters that he has met with the Broncos “multiple times” and that he will meet with them again soon.

This is interesting since the Broncos signed free agents Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller to pair with Bryce Callahan in their secondary. Now, both Fuller and Callahan have their contracts expiring at the end of the season, but the cornerback position isn’t an immediate pressing need for the Broncos. However, could the Broncos still consider Farley at 9? It would be risky, but with them remaining in contact with him, it seems plausible.

It would be risky because it was reported earlier this week that Farley, who has been widely mocked to the Broncos at 9th overall, would have microdiscectomy surgery on his back which would sideline him for a good bit this offseason. Add in Farley’s previous injury concerns and the fact that he sat out the 2020 season and you really have too many red flags to realistically take Farley at 9th overall.

With the San Francisco 49ers making a big trade with the Miami Dolphins for the third overall pick, it makes the Broncos' avenue to take a quarterback even tougher. So, what do they do at 9th overall? Quarterback seems unlikely now, Farley who was the popular pick may not even go in the first round now, and we have a roster with no real pressing needs. The Broncos could go a number of ways during the draft which should make for an interesting next month for us fans.
