What are the Broncos’ top positional needs heading into 2021 NFL Draft?

The Denver Broncos could go in a lot of directions in the 2021 NFL Draft. We take a look at their biggest roster needs here.

It’s Draft Week! As much as the debate around here gets heated over people’s opinions on this or that, there is one thing we all agree on and that’s the fact that the Denver Broncos have roster holes to address.

I went through the current roster and tiered the Broncos roster needs according to my own opinion on each position. There are three tiers of need with the first tier being the biggest need to the third tier of the lesser need. All of these positions could use additional depth and competition. If a position isn’t listed then I would consider any pick there to be a luxury pick or, perhaps, a necessary BPA-type selection that Denver would have to be crazy to pass on.

Let’s get to it.

Tier 1 Need: Quarterback

Now hear me out all of your Drew Lock fans. Whether this need gets filled by a first round Top 10 pick or by Drew Lock himself doing a Josh Allen-like turnaround. I don’t believe in lightning striking twice and given 99% of guys don’t do Josh Allen things after being a bad starting quarterback, I am leaning towards hoping a big Top 10 pick to address this tier 1 need. I’m sure many of you disagree and that is okay too.

Tier 2 Need: Right Tackle, Safety, Inside Linebacker, Running Back

Of these four position groups, I would put running back and right tackle as the bigger needs for 2021. However, getting a Will Parks type guy to play in certain defensive formations is also a key hole. That leaves probably the biggest concern is who will cover the elite tight ends that play in the AFC West? Any of these positions being addressed in the first two days of the draft would make me happy. Whether or not those picks work out notwithstanding.

Tier 3 Need: Edge Rusher, Interior Defensive Line, Cornerback

With the possibility of Von Miller playing his last season in Denver, the need to replace his insane production is something the team should be looking at long before Von is actually gone. While Denver has shown they can develop quality pass rushers, there just is no easy way to replace a Hall of Famer. The team also signed Kyle Fuller to a one-year deal, so cornerback is another position that should get addressed a year before the need is a full blown gaping hole on the defense.

Conclusion

Paton did a lot to address the Broncos roster issues on defense in free agency, but he is far from done. My hope is that they go all-in on a new quarterback, but if they do end up giving Drew Lock another season then they should do everything they can to field a powerhouse defense and a balanced offense. To me that means adding a dynamic running back earlier in the draft and find a linebacker or safety with great coverage skills when covering tight ends and running backs.

If they go quarterback, then I wouldn’t mind seeing them draft more with an eye to the future to address coming roster holes at edge and cornerback.
