Broncos draft wishlist: George Paton, get your guy

If there’s a player George Paton and the Broncos think will improve the team, be proactive and make it happen.

Good morning, Broncos Country!

A wishlist is always a dicey proposition.

For one, you’re setting yourself up for failure. And in the words of Peter La Fleur from “Dodgeball:”

“I found that if you have a goal, that you might not reach it. But if you don’t have one, then you are never disappointed. And I gotta tell ya ... it feels phenomenal.”

With that mind, I don’t have a wishlist for George Paton and the Denver Broncos, per se. As I’ve joked on the MHR Radio Podcast and other outlets, I want to stay married, so I can’t put a focus in college football like I do the Broncos and NFL.

My only “wish” is that Paton goes and gets “his guy.” If there’s a player he wants in the NFL draft, go and get him. I get the whole notion of letting the board play out, but that just screams reactive to me. Be proactive and make bold moves, especially if it’s a player he feels can make the Broncos better.

That’s true regardless of the position, not just quarterback. But it’s especially true if it is. If Paton really likes Justin Fields or Trey Lance, go get him. Don’t take it to chance and risk your guy not being there when you pick at No. 9.

A lot of this will lay in what the San Francisco 49ers do that with No. 3 pick. A lot of people seem to think the focus on Mac Jones is a major distraction from who they really want. I tend to think it’s not a distraction, but I’m not a doctor. Kyle Pitts to the Atlanta Falcons at No. 4 makes a ton of sense, since they just re-worked Matt Ryan’s contract. If Fields and/or Lance is there at No. 5, and Paton wants one of them, make the call to the Cincinnati Bengals and get it done.

Of course, if Paton doesn’t feel that way about a prospect in the draft, he’s shown he’ll be patient. He’s said he and the Broncos won’t be reckless. Whatever he ultimately chooses to do in a few weeks will get analyzed and scrutinized every possible way.

Based on what Paton has done in free agency to improve the defense and the secondary, Denver is in a good spot to top it off with a strong draft. That starts with the first-round pick.

If there’s a guy Paton wants, that the Broncos want, go and get him.
