As we draw ever closer to the 2021 NFL draft after big splash free agency moves are done, I see a landscape full of possibilities for the Broncos quarterback room in 2021.
They could stay the course with Drew Lock while hoping and praying for some sort of huge step in his development that jumps him up to being at least an average NFL QB.
They have a plethora of options with veteran QBs that they could trade for or sign in free agency (Gardner Minshew, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Alex Smith come to mind as potential upgrades).
They could trade up in the draft and get either Trey Lance or Justin Fields.
No one wants to talk about the possibility, but they could also trade for the hot legal mess that is Desean Watson as well.
First and foremost, this Broncos fan is in favor of a change at QB. The one we had had a full year as the chosen starter for the Broncos (minus a few games due to injury) and ended the season showing little noticeable improvement while leading his team to one of the worst 5 offenses the NFL has to offer.
The QBs we could get in free agency at this point all seem like moves akin to what the team did to bring in Case Keenum a few years back and don’t excite me much. Of the three I mentioned, I’d feel the best about Minshew as I think he has the highest ceiling of all of them.
I want nothing to do with my team trading for a guy like Watson no matter how much I think he might instantly upgrade our offense.
That leaves us with the draft. My hopes are that the Broncos have a guy they really like that they can go get by trading up in the draft. I think it is the best possible future for the team and for them to realistically get back to winning football.
