Good morning, Broncos Country!
Quinn Meinerz has the potential to become incredibly popular in these parts.
And not for pancaking dead trees either.
If he’s able to carry over his play from the Senior Bowl, it’s all but guaranteed that he will be a hit in Broncos Country. For me, he’s already one of my favorite rookies. He obviously has the right approach to the game. And the fact the Denver Broncos drafted him will only fuel his internal drive even more. It’s remarkable he didn’t play football last season yet made the impression he did.
But I also love that Meinerz has some fun. His “let the belly breathe” mantra is one of the coolest things ever. But I had no idea why he does it, and it’s so simple.
As he told the Broncos website last week after rookie mini camp:
“The main purpose behind that is when I start getting hot and I’m starting to breathe pretty heavy, I’ve got to roll up the jersey. As you can tell, the jersey fits a little snug. But it just naturally happens.”
Meinerz doesn’t want this mantra to become a distraction. He wants the focus to be on his play and how hard he works on the field and off of it. To that end, he said he’s really focused on learning the playbook.
“That’s crucial, and not only learning it from one position,” he told the Broncos website. “So, yeah, I’m definitely trying to learn it from both guards and from center. As an interior offensive lineman, you’re kind of expected to know all three of those positions, so you can slide in. And it not only adds value to myself as a player, but it adds value to the team to where I can gain that trust to be able to play all three positions.”
Whether Meinerz becomes a starter, only time will tell. But it’s going to be fun to follow him and see if this out-of-nowhere ride to the NFL continues.
