Broncos roster review: safety Mac McCain III

The Denver Broncos picked up North Carolina A&T cornerback Mac McCain as an undrafted free agent. Can he make the team as a rookie?

The focus on the secondary continued after the 2021 NFL Draft with the Denver Broncos added another cornerback as an undrafted free agent in North Carolina A&T’s Mac McCain.

Mac McCain’s profile

Height: 6’0”
Weight: 175 lbs
Age: 23 years old
Experience: Rookie
College: North Carolina A&T

The Broncos are at least very intrigued by McCain as they gave him a significant amount of money for an undrafted free agent at $50,000. Let’s take a look at the good and the bad for the rookie cornerback.

The good

McCain checks every box on the personal and mental side of football. He also has quality coverage skills and his best fit would be in a more ‘zone-heavy’ defense. Despite his smaller size, McCain is not afraid to go for the tough tackle against bigger players.

There is a lot of good about Mac McCain, but his limitations athletically will need to be overcome by superior technique. That is something we won’t know until we get deeper into training camp.

The bad

He lacks the size to take on more physical wide receivers and can get beat by fast vertical-type threats. These concerns will likely keep him out of the discussion for a starter-type guy, but he has the ability to find a role on the defense that could help him keep a roster spot on the team.

Final thoughts

I think McCain is definitely a threat to make the practice squad in his first season. While I don’t think he’ll push to make the main roster as a rookie, he could grow into Vic Fangio’s system enough to push for a roster spot down the road.

What do you think of Mac McCain’s potential under Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme?
