Is the Broncos QB battle worth watching?

We’ve been through this before. We’ve seen where this is going.

The Denver Broncos have experienced quite the offseason. From free agent signings, to rumors of trades for veteran QBs, to passing on a QB in the draft, George Paton’s first offseason has been nothing short of eventful.

And now that OTAs have begun, there was a pretty clear theme. Which QB was doing better, or worse. Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater will compete for the starting job. When Ian St. Clair and I sat down to record the MHR Radio Podcast, the excitement wasn’t exactly what it has been in the past.

Looking back on the last five seasons, Broncos Country has been sucked in, grasping for hope. From the Lynch/Siemian/Sanchez battle of 2016, to Case Keenum, to Joe Flacco, to Lock’s pandemic season, we have had high hopes, only to be dropped like a bag of sand each year.

It’s not that I don’t want to get excited about a Lock vs. Bridgewater slugfest. I do. I want to believe. I just... can’t.

Every tweet about an interception in 7 on 7 drills is just white noise that I can’t seem to get up for. And I’m not gatekeeping. Every fan should be allowed to process their fandom in the way they want. I have just hit my QB wall.

And every piece of Aaron Rodgers news only exacerbates the problem for me. I am a firm believer in the notion that the Broncos are just a QB away from contending. The AFC West is a tough place to play football. Rodgers would make it a little bit more bearable.

As is, I will reserve my excitement for actual games. I believe in the Vic Fangio led defense. I think the pieces are in place to make the offense solid. I told Ian on the show that the offensive line has the potential to be mentioned in the same breath as the best lines in the league.

It’s not like there isn’t anything to get excited about. There is, but the fools gold at QB since Peyton Manning retired has left me jaded, and a little gun shy.

Then again, that could all change in an instant.
