The Denver Broncos were active in the 2021 NFL Draft looking for secondary talent. They began the draft selecting cornerback Patrick Surtain and with their first of three seventh round picks they went cornerback again in LSU’s Kary Vincent Jr.
Kary Vincent’s profile
Weight: 185 lbs
Age: 22 years old
Value. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein had a fourth-round grade on Vincent and the Broncos were able to snag him in the final round of the draft. So the value was definitely there with this selection.
He projects as a slot corner due to his agility inside, which could mean Vic Fangio intends to groom him to backup Bryce Callahan and potentially take over the starting role for that position at some point in the future.
His strengths include an intriguing combination of work ethic, instincts, and athletic ability. He also has excellent ball skills when he gets the opportunity to make a play.
His size will be an issue, especially with more physical receivers and will struggle to get away from the blocker in run support. He’s also a bit passive as a run defender.
In coverage, his biggest issue appears to be technique. His lack of discipline there leads to mistakes that he must recover from using pure athleticism. That won’t be as easy to do at the NFL level as it was for him at LSU.
A lot of these issues are correctable through coaching. Vincent was praised by draft analysts for his smarts and work ethic, so I find his chances of overcoming these issues pretty high given all that and given he is going to a team with some of the best defensive coaching in all of football.
Personally, I think Vincent has a very good chance at making the team as a rookie despite the cornerback room being very crowded.
Currently, the cornerback room has Patrick Surtain, Mac McCain III, Essang Bassey, Parnell Motley, Michael Ojemudia, Duke Dawson Jr, Nate Hairston, Bryce Callahan, Ronald Darby, and Kyle Fuller. Of those, I would consider Surtain, Callahan, Darby, and Fuller as the only locks to make the team. That leaves a lot of competition for Vincent to make his case. At the end of the day, I suspect those final spots to come down to Ojumudia, Bassey, and Vincent.
What do you think about Vincent’s chances of the making the team as a rookie?
