Josey Jewell has some good advice: ‘Focus on the small things to get better right now’

The fourth-year veteran linebacker believes thinking too big picture at this point in the process is a killer.

Josey Jewell was on Broncos Country Tonight for a quick interview Wednesday, and he had some great advice for the young linebackers joining the room:

“Take it day by day. Don’t try to look at things big picture right away,” he said, noting that was better for the offseason. “Make small goals, daily goals, trying to get better at that one thing. Pay attention to your fundamentals. Multiplying those together can have an exponential effect.”

Such good advice.

For a fan base too, no doubt. Recognizing the big picture shouldn’t be predicted yet is a nice reminder.

Training camp isn’t about being perfect from day one. It’s about improving over the three weeks to come together in a cohesive unit by the end. The more veteran guys at key positions, the easier that is. Look at the small improvements in key places.

And though Denver’s offense is young and relatively inexperienced as NFL offenses go, the Broncos’ defense is now into its third season with Vic Fangio as architect. And that is giving Jewell a ton of confidence about understanding the scheme and knowing his role, which helps him master the small things.

So he has another piece of advice for guys like Justin Strnad and Baron Browning as they fit into this defense:

“Just get in the film room,” he said. “That’s the biggest thing. Watch our guys. Watch how they play the blocks. Watch how the safeties feel, watch where they are going to help. We got a couple smart guys underneath us, so it’s fun to watch.”

For the upcoming second preseason game, Jewell and his fellow linebackers are looking to do more of the same from the previous week.

“Just get organized out there. Get everyone on the same page. Execute on the small fundamental stuff,” Jewell said. “But right away, I just want to see us doing small things right. Being able to see stuff and play things a little faster as we go game by game.”
